Stansted Airport departuresThe check in area at the airport is on the ground floor of the terminal building. When you walk into the terminal you need to check which check in zone you need to be at. These are clearly visible by a yellow box with a letter in i.e. A, B, C and so on.

There are a good number of shops and eating and drinking outlets prior to going through security but the main hub of shops and restaurants are in the departures lounge.

Departures at London Stansted Airport

A general guide for check in at the airport is:

  • All charters (package holidays) check in 3 hours prior to departure
  • Long haul flights check in 3 hours prior to departure (El Al passengers 3.5 hours)
  • UK and Ireland flights check in 2 hours prior to departure

Boarding is normally 45 minutes prior to departure. Be sure to keep a check on the monitors as there are no calls for flights.

If you need to use an ATM (cash dispenser), there are machines before and after security in the departures lounge. For money exchange there is a choice of TTT Moneycorp, Travelex and Currency Express. Facilities are available both before and after security.

The main information desk is in the arrivals area. However, there are courtesy telephones placed all around the terminal building that you can use should you require information or assistance.

Toilets with baby changing facilities and wheelchair access are well signposted throughout the terminal building.

There are good facilities for people with special needs, including:

  • Induction loops, look for the sympathetic ear sign
  • Facilities for partially sighted or blind travellers
  • Hearing dogs and guide dogs are allowed in the airport

As it is some distance to the boarding gates there is a transit train that runs to connect you from the departures lounge and again to arrivals on your return. These trains are wheelchair friendly.

Reserved seating is also available throughout the terminal building.

The airport has Wi-Fi capability if you are travelling with a laptop. If not, Spectrum Interactive have various internet stations around the airport: before Security at check in Zone A and after Security next to Pret a Manger in the departures lounge; Est Bar (gates 1 to 19); near WH Smith (gates 20 to 39) and in the UK departures lounge (gates 84 to 88)
